Bold, Bizarre and Beautiful Art and Craft Show
Bold, Bizarre and Beautiful – Mental
Health Awareness Week Art and Craft
Exhibition
Thursday 8 October 2009
An exhibition showcasing the bold, beautiful and creative artistic talents of clients of the Mental Health Day Activity Centres will be held at the WEA Building in Invercargill this Friday and Saturday.
The exhibition, entitled the Bold, Bizarre and the Beautiful, features approximately 50 pieces of colourful arts and crafts, including paintings, Oamaru stone sculptures, woodwork, felt works and post modern sculptures, created by individuals who are on the road to recovery from mental illness.
Southland boasts three Day Activity Centres. 494 Dee and Rata House are run by Southland DHB as a joint venture with Methodist Mission Aotearoa, while Gore Welcome In is run by the DHB in partnership with Gore and Districts Mental Health Support Group. Clients of all three centres have the opportunity to try a wide rage of activities and crafts, including art programmes such as painting, mosaics, stone carving and card making. The clients are fortunate to have the expertise of the following people as tutors at the Day Activity Centres, Sheree Gutsell-Art Tutor at 494D; Roz Barclay – Art Tutor at Welcome In and Linda Jackson – Oamaru Stone Carving Tutor at Rata House.
Activity Centre Team Manager Raewyn Clarke said the centres’ activity programmes gave clients an opportunity to learn life and social skills as well as gain confidence in trying new activities.
494 Dee Art Tutor Sheree Gutsell says she is particularly excited about this year’s exhibition, which coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week, as it features a huge variety of bright and colourful work.
“Last year we exhibited at the Southland Museum and Gallery and the works featured darker colours including lots of charcoals. This year’s work seems to be nice and bright and we are pleased to feature the talents of a lot of people who haven’t exhibited before.”
The Bold, Bizarre and the Beautiful official exhibition opening will be open to the public from 3-6pm on Friday 9 October and from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, 10 October at the WEA Building, Esk St, Invercargill. Entry is free, and selected items are for sale.
