Cycling and style come together to combat climate change
Putting the beauty back into biking, Frocks on Bikes will add fashion-on-wheels to 350.org’s call for action on climate change, 24 October.
Frocks on Bikes shows women and the wider public that cycling is a fun and stylish way to save money, time and our climate.
Frocks On Bikes co-organiser Bella Cawthorn says cycling doesn't have to involve lycra or sweating.
“You can hop on a bike in your best frock, your highest-powered suit, or anything in between. Riding a bike in whatever you want to wear is easy way to get about – as well as being low-carbon.”
The aim of Frocks on Bikes is to celebrate both the glamorous and everyday use of bikes.
“Frocks on Bikes is a great opportunity to make the convenience, the fun and the social benefits of cycling part of our normal routine. In fact, so is the whole of Frocktober - there's something happening every week.”
Global Day of Action on Climate Change highlights the importance of climate issues and calls on world leaders to take real action in Copenhagen this December.
Cutting carbon emissions by using sustainable transport – of which bikes are a perfect example - is essential for our planet now and in the future.
Frocks On Bikes flocks around the country are cycling to support the 350.org Climate Day of Action.
“In Wellington we’re doing a short, leisurely ride joining up with the Great Harbour Way riders - who are cycling the circumference of Wellington’s beautiful harbour. We'll meet them as they cruise past the Wellington Railway Station.
“On arrival at the 350.org celebration site between Macs Brewery and the City to Sea Bridge we'll enjoy a relaxed ‘Frocknic’. Then everyone can enjoy the 350 festival in the afternoon, which showcases climate-friendly stalls, local bands and good food.”
Frocks On Bikes believe climate-friendly transport is for everyone. Bella says biking is an easy way for ordinary New Zealand women to be sustainable and healthy without sacrificing poise or style.
“Women have a key part to play in creating more cycle-friendly, sustainable cities. We encourage everyone who loves style, cycling, or who'd just like to give it a go, to come and join us.”
On Saturday 24 Frocktober the Frocks On Bikes flock will meet at 12:00 noon, in front of the Wellington Railway Station.
