Cooking up a storm at UCOL Wairarapa

Cooking up a storm at UCOL Wairarapa

Celebrity chef Al Brown is returning to his hometown to host a day of cooking demonstrations at UCOL Wairarapa’s Masterton campus at Labour Weekend.

Al’s demonstrations are a feature of the re-launch of UCOL Wairarapa’s School of Cookery and its programme for 2010.

“We are delighted Al has made himself available to help us promote our Certificate in Professional Cookery programmes,” says UCOL Wairarapa Campus Manager Angela Hewitt.
“It is the community’s opportunity to show their support for the Cookery programmes UCOL Wairarapa can offer and deliver at a local level.”

She says the Cookery programmes can only go ahead if there is sufficient community support, expressed in enrolments.

Al will present a public cooking demonstration for 100 lucky foodies from 11am until noon on Saturday 24 October. The renowned chef will continue to encourage aspiring chefs with a further afternoon session, aimed at those who are serious about a career in the kitchen.

He is excited about sharing his love of cooking with Wairarapa people. “Cooking is where my heart is: I enjoy giving back to the community and inspiring people to be more adventurous with food.

“There has been a food revolution over the past ten years and New Zealand has gradually gained confidence in its own cuisine. We are less influenced by European trends and thankfully have moved on from meat and three veg,” he says.

According to Al, there is no easy or quick way to become a good chef. He began his career washing dishes in a busy restaurant and then during his OE gained a Culinary Arts degree in the U.S. “Everyone has to eat. If you can cook, you can work all over the world,” he says.

Al Brown is co-owner of the famed Logan Brown Restaurant and Bar in Wellington, named Supreme Winner in the 2009 NZ Cuisine ‘Restaurant of the Year’ awards. He also co-presents the popular homegrown TV series Hunger for the Wild and recently launched his book Go Fish.
Places are strictly limited for both of Al’s cooking demonstrations. To reserve your seat phone 06 946 2300.
