The Dark Side of “Danny Tanner”

AUCKLAND, Monday November 2, 2009 – Known to millions as the clean cut, Danny Tanner in Full House while having stints presenting America’s Funniest Home Video and more recently providing the voice of the older Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother, Bob Saget is one of America’s beloved talents.

However, there is a dark side to the performer – his stand up shows are stark in contrast to his television persona, with liberal use of foul language and material that would sometimes make Lenny Bruce and George Carlin blush with embarrassment.

Fitting then that Comedy Central hand picked Saget as the special Roastee for their Comedy Central Roast, exclusive to Comedy Central and screening for the first time on New Zealand television. Hosted by Full House co-star John Stamos (“Uncle Jessie” to many of us), the roast features no-holds-barred verbal takedowns and burns as the network recruits comics from every background and style to put Saget in the hot seat with the likes of Sarah Silverman, Norm MacDonald, Jon Lovitz and many more all stepping up to bat.

Before Kath and Kim or Hamish and Andy, director Ted Emery showed the world his irreverent-yet-stylized comedic touch with the iconic sketch show Fast Forward. The show set the wheels in motion as the like of Magda Szubandski, Jane Turner, Gina Riley and Glenn Robins all become long time collaborators with Emery. With the premise of the viewer in no control of the channel surfing that was taking place before them, Fast Forward was ahead of it’s time and still remains not only a launching pad for Australia’s comic legends, but an influential piece of television history.

Nerds! The immortal cry from a movie very much synonymous with the 80’s. Thursday Night Movies throughout Nerdvember screens the juvenile sex comedy Revenge Of The Nerds, parts I, II, III and IV! Featuring Ted McGinley (“Jefferson” from Married With Children and he who is the patron saint of “jumping the shark”) as leader of the antagonistic Alpha Beta fraternity – jocks that burn their frat house down and force the socially inept freshmen out of their dorms and into the gymnasium. Degrading acts and humiliation after humiliation, the nerds have had enough and fight back – across four different movies. As the laughs ensue, maybe it’s also worth noting the adage that “it’s hip to be square”?

Cannes has it’s film festival, Edinburgh has it’s arts festival, Glastonbury has its music festival – but for comedy, there’s only one place comedians will tell you where to go; Montreal. Just For Laughs has grown from it’s humble two day, 16 performers event in 1983 into a two week pilgrimage for hundred of stand up acts around the world to celebrate comedy. The place for the latest, hottest up-and-coming talent on the world stand up circuit, chances are if you’re lucky enough to land a spot at the festival, a lucrative TV deal may await from one of the many talent scouts that now sit in attendance.
