National Jandal Day – Friday 4th December 2009

National Jandal Day – Friday 4th December 2009

Casual Friday will take on a new meaning on December 4 this year as Kiwis prepare to don their Jandals to support Surf Life Saving’s annual appeal day. National Jandal Day is set to make a big splash again this year as Kiwis all over New Zealand are urged to wear their jandals in support of Surf Life Saving.

Collectors will be out in force on Friday 4th December encouraging Kiwis to give generously to one of New Zealand’s most respected charities. Proceeds will go directly towards the purchase of essential rescue equipment, Surf Lifeguard training and extending services to meet the growing needs of our communities. National Jandal Day is in its third year – with 2008 raising a record $350,000.

“National Jandal Day plays a very important role for Surf Life Saving and raising awareness of the essential service we provide. Funds are down across the board this year as a direct result of the recession and it’s more important than ever that we maximize our fundraising opportunities wherever possible,” says Geoff Barry CEO Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

“Surf Life Saving is one of New Zealand’s most respected charities - there’s been a lot of criticism around charity fundraising over the last year or so and we are fortunate that we do not need to employ fundraising companies or pay commission to third parties. All our fundraising is conducted internally, which sees money raised by street collectors and Club initiatives go back to those Clubs. Every dollar raised will benefit Surf Life Saving.” said Barry.

“Surf Lifeguards made over 1300 rescues last summer and put in over 194,000 patrol hours – that kind of commitment is appreciated by the public of New Zealand and National Jandal Day gives Kiwis a chance to show their appreciation for the service our Lifeguards provide.” said Barry.

Havaiana is the gold sponsor of National Jandal Day this year. Havaiana jandals can be purchased online at www.nationaljandalday.co.nz for $29.95 with 100 per cent of proceeds going back to Surf Life Saving. Official National Jandal Day key rings can also be purchased from any Woolworths, Foodtown or Countdown store and from ASB Banks from 30 November.

Donations can be made:
• Online with credit card at www.nationaljandalday.co.nz.
