Auckland Boxing Association’s final show of year

Blood, sweat and beer are on the menu at the Auckland Boxing Association’s final show of the year.

Upcoming heavyweights battle for cash and glory in a last man standing competition at the ABA’s Eden Terrace stadium this Thursday .

Association matchmaker and boxing historian Johnny Lloyd has organised The Heavyweight Explosion, an eight-man elimination contest, with the winner of three bouts taking home $600 cash.

“The idea is a reworking of Jack Solomon’s novice heavyweight tournaments held in London in the 1950s, which produced English heavyweight champions Neville Meade, John L. Gardner and Danny McLinden,” explains Lloyd.

Eight boxers contest 3 x 2-minute rounds, with the four winners of the first bouts fighting another 3 x 2-minute rounds, with the final scheduled for 3 x 3-minute rounds.

Lloyd says the contestants have only limited professional experience so the competition is a chance to see some pre-Christmas fireworks as the fighters battle for dominance and cash for the festive season.

Three undercard pro fights are scheduled before the knockout competition.

The Auckland Boxing Association Stadium is at 1 Ngahura St, Eden Terrace, Auckland.

Doors open 7.30pm.

Heavyweight Explosion contestants include: Sean Miles, Xavier Horan, Johnny Iefata, Lance Glozier, Dante Pati, Monty Toa, and Dominic Reeder.
