Call for applications for Japan artists’ residency

Young New Zealand arts professionals are being invited to apply for an arts residency opportunity in Japan to be undertaken towards the middle of 2010.

The residency opportunity is for up to two and a half months and is being offered as part of the JENESYS programme administered by the Japan Foundation in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

The JENESYS (Japan East Asia Network of Exchange of Students and Youths) programme is an initiative offered by the Japan Foundation in 13 Asia-Pacific countries, including New Zealand.

The deadline for applications is 12 February 2010 and candidates need to be 35 years or younger to be eligible.

The previous successful New Zealand candidates are video artist Janet Lilo and author Carl Shuker.

The residency, available for a period from mid April – June 2010, will be hosted by NPO S-AIR in Sapporo. S-AIR will provide the recipient with opportunities to produce artworks, exchange ideas for collaboration and develop networks.

The application process for New Zealand art professionals is facilitated by the Asia New Zealand Foundation. The JENESYS programme includes round-trip airfares between Japan and New Zealand as well as accommodation and other expenses.

The recipient will be encouraged to present the outcomes of his or her residency experiences in the forms of a public event in Japan as well as in New Zealand after they return.
