Auckland 2010 Big Day Out map

Your Auckland Big Day Out Is At Mount Smart Stadium

Click for big version

There are just nine days to go and things are falling into place for what promises to be one of the best events in the Big Day Out’s seventeen year history at Mount Smart Stadium.

The site environment has been tweaked for comfort this year, with one significant change being the Smokefree Local Produce Stage moving to a new location inside the Gate B entry up alongside the Green and Essential Stages as shown on the official map published today.

Promoter Campbell Smith talks up the move as a profile boost for a stage that hosts a range of local talent from up and comers like Christchurch’s O’Lovely to hip-hop chart toppers Kidz in Space and is headlined by Opensouls, undoubtedly one of the country’s best live bands.

“We’ve found a spot that allows us to use more of the site than in previous years and gets the stage out from under the shadow of the Boiler Room,” noted Smith. “At Auckland’s early Big Day Outs I remember this stage actually being tucked under the West Stand on the concourse next to a hot dog stand so we are heading in the right direction.”

The Smokefree Local Produce stage will face the carnival rides that make up part of the Big Day Out experience alongside all the music on offer.

Big Day Out has already unveiled some of the other madness that is coming back in the form of the Silent Disco and the mini-Mexican antics at Lilyworld. This year also sees the festival raise the profile of its sideshow onsite art installations according to Smith.

A screening booth features the award-winning Big Day Out “audience is the art” film Rapture, while Graffiti Research Lab bring technology together with street art in the Boiler Room on an impressive scale.

“We have enjoyed Carlos Van Camp’s lightning man antics on the main field over the past few years and he has upped his game to threaten the national grid with his mad science show this year,” says Smith

Van Camp’s Celestial Coils will be a display of sound modulated lightning bolts using the largest Audio Modulated Tesla coils in the world to move lightning bolts to a beat that actually amplifies the music.

And the V Rocket Man will also be launched for a flight across the Big Day Out.

In a passable impersonation of Jeremy Clarkson, Smith then denied that he will be the Stig-style Rocketman before launching a befuddled attack on a nanny state law he had read about on the internet that banned a rooster from accompanying the V Rocket Man on his flight.

“We could have made a little helmet for the fowl,” claimed Smith. “His comb could have stuck out the top.”

The “law” about the rooster in hot air balloons is most likely to be an internet hoax. New Zealand’s silliest law still in the statute books is generally thought to be the 1908 Mercantile Agents Act requiring shopkeepers to use red ink to write the price on books or magazines sold in instalments. THE AUDIENCE IS THE ART:
RAPTURE (SILENT ANTHEM) 2009 BY ANGELICA MESITI (AUSTRALIA):
Also, we present a captivating, moving image work by video, performance and installation artist Angelica Mesiti. Shot in Sydney at The Big Day Out in 2008, the soundless video titled RAPTURE (SILENT ANTHEM) uses slow motion footage to capture a spectrum of experiences. From shared public responses to private intimate moments in the midst of the crowd. Winner of the 58th annual Blake Prize, Mesiti conveys an incredibly powerful essence of human spirituality. From the simple starting point of documenting the audience at the front of stage, RAPTURE succeeds to overhaul the viewer’s own emotional state.

GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB [GRL] PERTH (AUSTRALIA): Represented by Steve Berrick and Jerrem Lynch, GRL PERTH promotes excellence in graffiti whilst openly developing and sharing street art techniques and technology. Jerrem and Steve will be touring to projection bomb the Big Day Out, and show you how - armed with a projector and a computer - anyone can make their mark on a massive scale. Have your name (tag) or artwork blasted up high for all to see. Dedicated to making and sharing lots of new ways to appreciate and create street art. Learn how you can do your own guerrilla street projections. GRL is a global network of individuals committed to providing street artists, graffiti writers and other individual voices the ways and means of having their presence heard in cities flooded with commercial advertising. The general idea is simple; use technology to change the way people think about graffiti. By creating open source technology and encouraging people to do it themselves, GRL sparks a new ways of thinking about graffiti.

CELESTIAL COILS BY CARLOS VAN CAMP (NEW ZEALAND): Carlos Van Camp returns to the Big Day Out with the CELESTIAL COILS. Having previously wowed BDO crowds with his Lightning Rider show (a single Tesla coil and a performer wearing a protective metal suit throwing the bolts around from his hands and head) and the Lords of Lightning show (two performers battle it out on the large twin phase coils). Carlos felt it was time to take on a new challenge and build something that was completely unique. ‘As the Big Day out is a music oriented event, I wanted to incorporate sound into our show’. The result is a pair of speakers, each 8 meters in diameter that uses a powerful display of sound modulated lightning bolts to produce an audio visual experience that moves to the beat and actually amplifies the sounds we feed into it. The CELESTIAL COILS are the largest Audio Modulated Tesla coils in the world! Enjoy watching the music! You will be amazed!
