Jacqueline Aust: Abstract
Maree Horner:
Critical Penetralia Exhibitions at Solander
3
February - 27 February
Opening at Solander: works on paper on Wednesday 3 February are new exhibitions featuring two north island based artists well versed in working with their chosen medium of solar plate - or photopolymer printmaking. This process, which relies on the use of sunshine (UV light) to produce the image plate which the artist later prints on an etching press, allows the artist to build their imagery up in a number of ways, while taking advantage of a process which is low in toxicity compared to the likes of traditional etching.
Jacqueline Aust's 'Abstract' series of new prints embrace the capabilities of solar plate printmaking and explores patterns of composition from the unintentional marks, shapes and textures of human habitation observed in Florence. Aust achieves a lyrical sense of movement across the image area with these scratchy, energetic marks.
Maree Horner's new series of photopolymer etchings, 'Critical Penetralia', juxtaposes architectural portals with stationary white donkeys, continuing the theme of her previous work where female and male elements jostle to form symbolic images on the surface of the print.
The artists will present a floor talk, starting at 5pm prior to the opening function on Wednesday 3 February. All welcome.
In conjunction with the 2010 exhibition programme Solander will continue to run workshops on practical printmaking and bookbinding. Anthony Davies will take a relief printmaking workshop on Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 of March, followed by Simple Book Repair on Sunday 18 April with Vincent Drane. Places are limited, see www.solandergallery.co.nz for further details.
