The 95bfm Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher 11/02

The 95bfm Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher 11/02/10

Coming up on the show today:

1215 – Robert Connolly, Director of Balibo
A film I was sad to miss at last year’s International Film Festival was Balibo, which told the story of five young journalists (4 Australians and 1 New Zealander) who were murdered in Timor in 1975 during an invasion by Indonesian Troops. Luckily, it’s now getting a general release and I was fortunate enough to catch up with the film’s director Robert Connolly. He explained why he wanted to make the film, why he chose drama over documentary, and the issues he had to navigate when making Balibo.

1230 – Maire Leadbetter, Indonesian Human Rights Committee

Following the interview with Robert, I’ll be talking to Maire Leadbetter who will give a bit of historical context to the Balibo film and the supposed government cover up of the Balibo Five’s murder.

1240 - Tim Reddish, Chief Executive of the Taxi Federation
It’s a common discussion every time a taxi driver is attacked and following the murder of Hiren Mohini in Mt Eden last Sunday, it’s emerged again. Should taxis be fitted with cameras? While this measure certainly would improve safety, does it breach privacy in any way? And how will it be paid for? Joining me at 1240 to discuss this issue is the chief executive of the Taxi Federation, Tim Reddish.

1305 – Paul Quinn, National MP
It’s part of democratic process that all members of a given age in society are able to vote and elect their government. However, what happens if that person transgresses the laws and rules of that society? Should they still be able to vote in general elections? National MP Paul Quinn does not think so. He believes that prisoners, no matter what crime they’ve been convicted of, should lose their right to go to the ballot. His “Electoral (Disqualification of Convicted Prisoners) Amendment Bill” is set to go before Parliament in March and I spoke to him this morning on the issues surrounding it.

1335 – Papercuts with Pennie – Thanks to MagNation
This week on Papercuts Pennie reviews ‘Peppermint’ the magazine about ‘eco-friendly dog-hair fashion.’ Stay tuned to find out what the dickens that means.

1345 – Dear Science with Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre
Dear Science is your weekly fix of science news and issues. This week Peter will be covering Rodney Hide’s dodgy use of climate change information, Google buzz, and hackers in Australian getting into Canberra’s web server in protest of Internet copyright legislation.
