The Hurt Locker to Screen at Cinema Showcase

The Hurt Locker to Screen at the World Cinema Showcase

The World Cinema Showcase has secured critically-acclaimed film The Hurt Locker for Auckland and Wellington screenings ahead of the New Zealand release.

The film has received nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, and will be the Showcase special presentation. The film follows a US Marine bomb disposal squad based in Iraq and has been called “a near perfect movie” by Time Magazine.

“We are pleased to confirm Showcase audiences will be the first in the country to experience The Hurt Locker on the giant screen – where it deserves to be seen. The Showcase provides an opportunity for audiences to see the latest in quality world cinema and the film is a great addition to the programme,” says Showcase director Bill Gosden.

The Hurt Locker is the first major announcement for the Showcase in 2010 with the full programme due out at the end of February. The Showcase is in its twelfth year and is a mini-Festival organised in conjunction with independent cinema operators in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

“The Showcase gives us, the organisers of the NZ International Film Festival, the opportunity to bring titles to the big screen that we think should have a cinema viewing. Some return from the main Festival while others are films that have caught our eye in the later half of 2009.” says Gosden.

Further title announcements today include Automorphosis, a documentary by art car enthusiast Harrod Blank; Picture Me: A Model’s Diary, an inside portrayal of the fashion industry by model Sara Ziff; Everyone Else a contemporary German feature about young love; Louise-Michel, a French feature described by Variety as “side-splittingly funny and constantly outrageous”.
