Chelsea’s crowd-pleasing “floral pylons” launched

Chelsea’s crowd-pleasing “floral pylons” to be launched at Ellerslie

Two new releases of the Chelsea Flower Show crowd-pleasing allium bulb will be launched at next week’s Ellerslie International Flower Show.

Allium Mars (pictured left) and Allium Mount Everest (right) from South Africa will be released by GardenPost, New Zealand’s largest garden-related mail order business.

Company owner Geoff Brunsden says alliums have tended to be an afterthought for many gardeners when it comes to thinking about bulbs for their garden.

“Say bulbs and it’s usually tulips, daffodils and crocuses that spring to mind. Alliums have tended to be a second cousin, yet the bulbs have fantastic showy flowers which are great for cutting and drying.

“Alliums took last year’s Chelsea Flower Show by storm with a huge resurgence of interest in the ornamental onion.”

He says as alliums grow to more than one metre in height they tend to be the floral pylons of the garden, standing tall and marching across the landscape.

“Alliums have strong appeal because of their architectural structure; long, tall, slender stems topped with balls that often tower above other plants, giving height and depth to the garden.”

GardenPost imports and sells thousands of varieties of bulbs and plants from throughout the world. They also stock Allium Gladiator, Allium Purple Sensation and Allium Giganteum.

The new release Allium Mars and Allium Mount Everest will retail at the Ellerslie International Flower Show for $11.50 a bulb.
