National Jazz Festival in Tauranga for Easter
National Jazz Festival in Tauranga for Easter
Tauranga is the place to be for Easter with the 48th National Jazz Festival taking place in the city across five days from April 1-5.
As the oldest jazz festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the oldest in the world, the National Jazz Festival is an iconic event on New Zealand’s music calendar.
This year’s festival not only features two international music legends – New Orleans’ Dr John with his band The Lower 911 and the stunning Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express – but also includes a new jazz fusion club, the premiere of a project marrying music to historic New Zealand film footage, a tribute to Peggy Lee and a host of great New Zealand jazz acts every night at the University of Waikato Jazz Club.
Plus, there are special excursions including the Jazz Steamtrain (two or four hour options) with three bands on board strolling between carriages and The Sebel Trinity Wharf Tauranga Jazz Riverboat with a gentle harbour tour of Tauranga Moana aboard the Kewpie enjoying the sounds on the on-board jazz band.
And Tauranga’s own version of New Orleans’ French Quarter, the TV3 Jazz Village returns with more than 20 bands on four stages on Sunday 4 and Monday 5 April, while the free Downtown Tauranga Carnival brings a diverse assortment of jazz to the central city on four stages on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 April.
