Noel McKenna Exhibition At Murrurundi

Noel McKenna exhibition at Murrurundi -

2nd April till 30th May: While best known for work observing and chronicling urban and suburban environments, Noel McKenna’s practice has also revealed an interest in regional communities and country landscapes. Previous exhibitions have come out of the artist’s travels in Tasmania, New Zealand and along the South Coast of New South Wales. This new exhibition is the result of Noel McKenna’s recent visits to the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales and continues his long- term interest in horses and the sport of horse racing.

McKenna was drawn to The Upper Hunter to experience first hand, the landscape that is currently the subject of a battle between the horse industry and local farmers, and proposed coal mining sites. In this selection of paintings, the artist applies a delicate wash technique to suggest the stark contrast between lush paddocks and the harsh dryness of the mines. McKenna’s snapshots of daily life in the area seem innocuous when juxtaposed with the artist’s rendering of the coalmines, all monochrome save for the yellow of earth-movers and safety vests. While the green hills reach up to the sky, the mines literally spiral downwards into a dark void.

This exhibition is undertaken in conjunction with Darren Knight Gallery
