Ordination Of New Bishop
Representatives from throughout the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia will gather tomorrow, Saturday April 17th for the service of Ordination and Installation of The Very Reverend Ross Bay as the 11th Bishop of Auckland. The service begins at 1pm in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Parnell, Auckland.
A karanga will call Ross Bay into the Cathedral. This will follow a long procession of clergy from the Diocese of Auckland, as well as representatives from New Zealand and also Polynesia. Local mayors, MPs and representatives from other church denominations will also be attending the service.
Following his ordination, the newly ordained Bishop is welcomed by the Cathedral community in what is called the Service of Installation. This begins with the Bishop following an ancient tradition of knocking three times with his pastoral staff on the closed doors of the Cathedral. The doors are then opened to welcome the new Bishop to the Cathedral where the Bishop’s chair resides as a sign of his office.
The pastoral staff to be used by the new bishop has history and reflects the succession of bishops in Auckland. The staff was presented to Bishop William Cowie in 1890 by the clergy of the Diocese of Auckland to mark his 21st year as Bishop of Auckland. The same staff was laid down on the altar by the previous Bishop of Auckland, the Rt Rev’d John Paterson when he retired in March this year.
