Trampers warned to stay clear of Tararuas

Trampers warned to stay clear of Tararuas over weekend

Trampers are being warned not to venture into the Tararua Forest Park over the weekend as river levels rise due to heavy rain, and high winds buffet the area.

The MetService is predicting between 80 to 100mm of rain to fall in higher parts of the Tararuas to 9pm tonight, and between 30 to 40mm at low levels.

The heaviest falls are expected between 4pm and 7pm as the front passes, when rainfall rates could reach 30mm/hr.

The Department of Conservation is urging people to postpone planned weekend trips into the Tararuas because of the conditions.

“There is heavy rain at the moment and very high winds and the forecast is not very good,” says Department of Conservation Kapiti Area manager Ian Cooksley.

Trampers currently in the Tararuas who need to exit across a river or across the tops should stay put, he said.

“The wind will be very strong on the exposed ridges making travel very difficult, and river levels are expected to reach high levels,”
