Smokefreerockquest 2010 Nelson Marlborough Heats Results

Fourteen school bands were selected at heats held at the New Hub on Saturday, to go on to the combined Nelson and Marlborough Smokefreerockquest 2010 regional final.

Smokefreerockquest director Glenn Common said the bands going on to the final were on an aspirational pathway, following role models who have made careers out of their Smokefreerockquest success.

“This might be rockers like Midnight Youth or singer-songwriters like Anika Moa – whatever the motivation is, music is a passion that is a very positive force in young people’s lives,” he said. “Music doesn’t care what your background is or what your school record is like… whoever you are, Smokefreerockquest provides a way to channel your energy through a creative process that delivers a great end result.”

These are the 14 bands that will compete for the Nelson Marlborough regional title, on Saturday 26 June at the Trafalgar Centre, start time 7pm, tickets $15 at Everyman Records or $20 at the door.

Smokefreerockquest is New Zealand’s only live, nationwide, youth, original music competition. This year it has attracted record entries of 790 bands and soloists, or around 3500 individuals, with around 20,000 expected to turn out to watch their peers perform at regional heats and finals.

Throughout May and June heats and finals are held in 24 regions, and from each regional final two bands go forward into the selection pool for the national final in Hamilton, with the eight finalists announced in August. This year’s national final will be held in Hamilton on September 11, prizes include a NZ On Air new recording and music video grant worth $10,000, musical gear to the value of $10,000 from NZ Rockshops, recording time at York St Studio, radio promotional support for a single, The Edge airplay award, with the opportunity to be played on The Edge, video play on youth music channel C4, a place on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, a photo shoot sponsored by Schick and a promotional package from Myspace New Zealand. Other awards include the Mainz Scholarship for outstanding musicianship, the Apra Lyric Award and the Smokefree Women’s Musicianship Award.
