New Zealand Hopefuls Have Inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Their Sight

Singapore is hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, 14-26 August 2010.

Several New Zealand sporting hopefuls will be making the trip up to Singapore with the aim of bringing home Gold in their respected disciplines. The Games will see 5,000 athletes throughout the world, aged between 14 and 18 years take part in 26 sports comprising 201 events, held in 18 competition venues, all determined in consultation with the International Federations and approved by the International Olympic Committee. Each event has age group categories: 15-16 years, 16-17 years, or 17-18 years.

The Youth Olympic Games will be the first international sporting event to offer an integrated sport, culture and education programme, with the aim of educating, engaging and encouraging athletes to be true to the spirit of the Olympic movement, by adopting the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, and playing active roles in their communities.

The Games also hopes to provide young athletes with an invaluable insight into the importance of respect and friendship by creating a lasting sports, culture and education legacy for Singapore and youths worldwide.

Singapore expects to receive officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees, along with estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 370,000 spectators.
