Two New Exhibitions At Solander

The Riders Of The Red Manuka: Faith McManus 23 June - 10 July

Faith McManus exhibits at Solander a suite of woodcut prints entitled, ‘The Riders Of The Red Manuka.’ This work is inspired by the legend of a cowboy movie made in 1926 set in the Far North. This suite of intimate woodcuts explores a fascinating part of New Zealand’s history. Faith brings a sensitivity to her depiction of the characters and landscape. The graphic quality of the woodcuts is balanced by her use of a beautifully subtle colour palette.

Faith often draws inspiration for her work from the interweaving of ancestry, myth and culture. It was these elements in the legend of the movie that she found irresistible. Faith has pieced together fragments of memories, starting with the whanau and the stories and photographs from her mother and neighbours that shed light on the real cowboys of the period.

As Faith says, “It doesn’t actually matter if the film existed or not; in the space between reality and dreams the cowboys are still riding their horses in the good country of my imagination.”

Alongside the work of Faith McManus, David Sarich is exhibiting new works on paper that are inspired by the landscapes of the Far North. David’s work has often been concerned with ideas of journey, prophecy and connection to particular places and their stories. There is a constant intertwining of the personal and the historical, narrative and symbol. These etchings explore many of the locations that were filmed in the 1920’s and documented in the period photographs of Arthur Northwood. David is drawn by the sense of “space and light” that he finds in the landscapes of the Far North.

Join Clive Sowry, film historian, as he presents his research with original film footage and photographs from the 1920’s. A journey, which ultimately debunked the myth of a lost ‘Western’ feature film from the Far North. Clive will present his talk against the backdrop of an exhibition by artists Faith McManus and David Sarich.
