Top Artists Sing Out For Kiwi Kids – On Maori Television

Che Fu and Tigi Ness, Warren Maxwell, Maisey Rika, Hollie Smith, Young Sid and Mr Sicc, Dallas Tamaira, The Bellbirds and Wellington’s Kotuku Choir present intimate, at-home concerts in TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE – screening on Maori Television on Sunday June 27 at 9.10 PM and repeated on Monday June 28 at 10.00 PM.

This outstanding musical documentary is part of a two-night landmark broadcast TAMARIKI ORA: A NEW BEGINNING which shows how all New Zealanders can help to stop child abuse, and tells – in compelling mini-documentary style – the inspiring stories of how families have emerged from the darkness of violence. In TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE, viewers are invited into each performer’s home to enjoy acoustic, intimate songs dedicated to our children and to the hope that we will all play our part to halt child violence.

Many of the artists have young families, they share deep concern about family violence in New Zealand and were very keen to be part of the musical tribute, says Maori Television producer Michele Bristow. “They wanted to take a lead in standing up and encouraging people to think about their role in stopping violence against children,” Bristow explains. “And the way in which TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE is shot makes you feel that you are the only person in the room – it’s really personal and really gripping.”

Bellbird Don McGlashan hopes TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE “encourages people to bring the subject into the open; to go beyond merely sensationalising the tragic, extreme cases where desperate parents hurt their kids, and recognise that economic inequality, the break-up of communities, materialism and bad role-models are things that affect us all – making it harder for all of us to be good parents. If we can admit that these problems belong to all of us, then we can all have a stake in fighting them.”

TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE is directed by one of the country's most decorated music video directors, Chris Graham, who has worked with artists including Smashproof, Savage and Scribe as well as directing the hit feature film Sione’s Wedding. It screens on Maori Television on Sunday June 27 at 9.10 PM and repeats on Monday June 28 at 10.00 PM.
