Auckland Museum Feeds the Kids this School Holidays

The Museum gives families the chance to celebrate Kai to Pie: Auckland on Your Plate - the tastiest place to be these July school holidays.

There’s a raft of exciting activities including the opening weekend’s Family Food Fiesta, a special Night at Auckland Museum, Encounters with Eels, a kapa haka performance to coincide with Matariki and a programme of free daily activities throughout the July 3-18 holiday period.

The opening weekend of 3 – 4 July sees a Food Fiesta, a vibrant festival of food and culture. Chef Charles Royal will demonstrate just how fun and healthy Maori cuisine can be. Kids will be able to watch live eel-feeding and sample the treats of Poppy our zany Trolley Dolly.

Every day children can grind their own flour, decide what foods to grow in a seasonal garden, enjoy storytelling sessions and make a growing gift to take away in the dedicated Family Garden Space. It’s a kids’ activity area with a difference, one that inspires children to think about what they eat and where it comes from.

On Sunday, hunt for Food Glorious Food in the oddest of places at the premiere of our all-new Night at Auckland Museum. Food Glorious Food will give children a chance to explore the new Kai to Pie exhibition after-hours, encounter a host of colourful food-related characters and enjoy fun activities. They’ll survive the castaway challenge, feed the Museum dinosaurs and finish fish hooks for a Pacific voyage and more!

Encounters with Eels takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the holidays. As well as eel-feeding, kids can learn about this amazing creature, including their migration patterns, how and where to catch them, and the best ways to eat them.

And every Saturday of the school holidays, and through until the end of October, the Museum hosts the World on Your Plate series; each week a different community group will host cooking demonstrations and tastings, as well as cultural performances from some of the 181 ethnic groups that call Auckland home.
