Kiwis More Interested
in All Whites than All Blacks
A new poll shows interest in soccer soaring, with more New Zealanders interested in the All Whites’ performance at the World Cup than the All Blacks’ performance in either the Ireland / Wales tests or in the upcoming Tri-nations.
- 36% say that they are more interested in the All Whites at the World Cup than the All Blacks in the Ireland / Wales tests, while just 15% are more interested in the All Blacks. 40% say they are equally interested in both, while 9% aren’t interested in either.
- 34% say that they are more interested in the All Whites at the World Cup than the All Blacks in the Tri-nations, while 18% are more interested in the All Blacks. 38% are interested in both equally, with 9% not interested in either.
While more New Zealanders are interested in rugby than are interested in soccer generally (62% interested in rugby, 53% interested in soccer), many people who are not generally interested in soccer are interested in the All Whites at the World Cup. 88% of New Zealanders are either interested in soccer generally or interested in the All Whites at the World Cup.
Asked who they think will win the World Cup, however, just 3% pick New Zealand. Brazil (29%), Germany (18%) and Argentina (12%) are seen as the favourites to take home the trophy.
These results are based upon an online survey of a representative sample of 1,112 New Zealanders, conducted by UMR Research. The survey was in the field from 16th to 22nd June 2009.
- 85% of the surveys were completed between the All Whites’ draws with Slovakia (June 15th) and Italy (June 21st).
- The margin of error for sample size of n=1,112 for a 50% figure at the ‘95% confidence level’ is ±2.94%.
The survey was paid for by UMR Research, and was not commissioned by any other third party.
