Handbags, heels and big hair at drag racing
Press release from American Express Queenstown Winter Festival
Handbags, heels and big hair at today's drag racing
30 June 2010
The hijinks and hilarity continued at the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival today (June 30) as a 1500-strong crowd massed at Earnslaw Park for the highly anticipated annual Drag Race and inaugural Dodgeball championships.
Amid cheers and appreciative wolf whistles from the crowd, Beach Barbie (a.k.a.Richard Thomas) was crowned "Queen of Queenstown" after winning the hotly contended Q92 MoreFM Drag Race.
Beach Barbie has drag raced previously and vowed to keep returning until she took out the title. She proved to be a force to contend with as she shoulder-barged her way through the other competitors and was a natural at steeplechase.
"Wow, that was seriously handbags at dawn said Beach Barbie. I shall take my reign seriously and be back to defend my title next year"
The award for Miss Photogenic was taken out by Zippy Long Stockings who looked fetching in striped tights and a pig-tailed mane of blonde hair. Miss Friendly went to first time entrant Wadina Pornelius who went out of her way to appeal to the crowd, judges and fellow drag racers. Miss Best Dressed Irene Yankerbollockoff was impeccably turned out in a black faux-leather two piece with sky-high heels and Miss Personality for 2010 was Beach Barbie who also took out the overall title.
