TAB Offers Betting On World Shearing Championship

TAB Offers Betting On Prestigious World Shearing Championship

Fresh off the heels of a very successful Football World Cup, the TAB now turns its focus towards another event where New Zealand has a realistic chance of being unbeaten-the World Shearing Championship to be held at the Royal Welsh show, Llanelwedd, Bluith Wells, Wales, 20-21 July 2010.

TAB shearing Bookie Kieran McAnulty said the New Zealand team, lead by Shearing icon David Fagan, headed to Wales as red-hot favourites and the TAB were proud to offer punters a chance to back them all the way. The TAB received an overwhelming response during this year’s Golden Shears and all involved are very excited about providing new betting opportunities for the World Champs.

“The TAB has never previously offered so many betting opportunities on shearing and as the world championship always attracts considerable attention from New Zealanders we expect a large amount of interest from our punters.” He said.

He continued by stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity for punters to get behind a sport which is an integral component in New Zealand’s cultural identity, not to mention David Fagan’s bid for an unprecedented 6th World title”

The TAB asks the question “Will David Fagan win a 6th World title?” with “yes” the overwhelming favourite at $1.50. Other new betting opportunities include Head to Head options, where punters have a chance to back the winner between the two New Zealand shearers, David Fagan ($1.40) and Cam Fergusson ($2.80). They also have the opportunity to back a NZ Quinella (1st and 2nd finish) at attractive odds of $1.33.

For the first time ever the TAB are offering odds on Woolhandling, with World Champion Sharee Alabaster, of Taihape, favourite to beat the field at $1.20. Although 28 countries are set to compete at this year’s champs New Zealand truly are front-runners in most events, so the TAB has also provided an option where punters can back how many wins the New Zealand team will leave Wales with come 21 July, with ‘3 wins’ the odds-on favourite at $1.80, closely followed by ‘4 wins’ at $2.25)

“The New Zealand Racing Board holds a commitment to increasing the profile of Shearing by passing a proportion of funds placed with the TAB back to New Zealand Shearing, so we see expanding our betting opportunities to include such options as an expansion of that commitment.” Mr McAnulty said.

“Although David Fagan is favourite to secure another World title the TAB is fully aware of the genuine possibility of an upset this year, especially after Waipawa’s Cam Fergusson edged past Fagan in the dying seconds of this year’s Golden Shears. Both the Kiwi boys will be desperate to be the reigning World Champion when the World championship returns home to Masterton next time” He said.
