Ross Harris Performance To Feature On Naxos

--FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE---

APO’s Ross Harris Performance To Feature On International Recording

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is to feature on a recording for Naxos, the world’s largest classical music label.

The APO’s performance of Ross Harris’ Second Symphony featuring New Zealand soprano Madeleine Pierard on Thursday 19 August at Auckland Town Hall will be recorded for the label to feature on an album which will also include Ross’ Symphony No 3.

APO chief executive Barbara Glaser says it is the orchestra’s first recording for Naxos. “It is recognition that the APO has reached a benchmarked international performance level.”
It’s also a great statement of faith about Ross’s music and that it deserves to be heard by the wider musical world – this recording will be distributed around the world and online.”

Ross’ Second Symphony, which was written for Madeleine Pierard and was premiered by the APO in 2006, features in the APO’s APN News and Media Series Concert 7: Echoes of War along with Elgar’s Cello Concerto with leading Scandanavian cellist Andreas Brantelid and Ives’ The Unanswered Question.

Each of the three pieces in the concert reflects on themes of love and loss in the Great War.Ross Harris’ symphony brings to life eight poems by Vincent O’Sullivan which tell the true story of a New Zealand World War I soldier who fought in the battle of the Somme, fell in love, moved in with a French girl, and was subsequently court-martialled and shot as a deserter. The piece was awarded the SOUNZ Comtemporary Award in 2006 and won praise for its sensitive, yet dramatic treatment of the theme of war.

Elgar’s haunting Cello Concerto was composed during the summer of 1919 at Elgar's secluded cottage in Sussex, where during previous years he had heard the sound of the artillery of World War I rumbling across the Channel at night from France. Immediately after regaining consciousness following an operation, Elgar asked for pencil and paper and began to write down a melody that would become the first theme from the concerto.
