Huntly schoolchildren to perform with NZSO
Huntly school students will have the chance to play with
musicians of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in two
concerts at HuntlyCollegethis month.
An NZSO ensemble is returning to Huntly courtesy of Solid Energy, after the orchestra’s first local visit last year attracted more than 800 primary and secondary students.
This year five students from each school are being invited to play along with the 19-member ensemble, which features players from the wind, brass, string, percussion and harp sections.
The schools concerts on 17 August feature a mix of classical pieces by Handel and Tchaikovsky, popular waiata and easily recognisable pop tunes, including the theme to The Simpsons. The programme is designed to introduce students to the various classical instruments and the role each section plays in the orchestra.
In a first for the people of Huntly, the NZSO ensemble will also perform on 16 August in a free community concert sponsored by Solid Energy.
“Solid Energy is very pleased to bring a performance by members of the NZSO to Huntly. They are world class and this is a unique opportunity for students and community. We are thrilled to support having members of the NZSO perform locally,” says Craig Smith, General Manager of Solid Energy’s North Operations.
NZSO Chief Executive Peter Wallssays: “It was a special experience performing in Huntly last year and we’re delighted to make this return visit for the schools concerts, and the community event.
“We hope that Huntly’s young people and their families will enjoy everything the players of their national orchestra have to offer.”
