Something for everyone on Gamblefree Day

From street theatre with pokie machines being demolished in a puff of smoke, to restaurant dining discounts and community events, there is something for everyone on Gamblefree Day Wednesday 1 September.

Tony Milne, Problem Gambling Foundation National Public Health Practice Leader, says Gamblefree Day has been an annual event since 2005 and is a day dedicated to raising awareness about problem gambling in communities.

“We want people to get out and enjoy some of the events and activities taking place and at the same time learn about the impact problem gambling has on communities,” he says.

Gamblefree Day events and activities include the following:

Auckland
• Street theatre and the demolition of pokie machines at Manukau Square starting at 12.15pm
• Pokie machine march through the CBD starting at 12.10pm from Grafton Bridge
• Glen Innes community event on Saturday 4 September starting at 10am in Mayfair Place and including a free family movie in the evening.

Wellington
• Lunchtime street stalls and entertainment in Cuba Street between 11am and 3pm.

Christchurch
• Free coffee, sausage sizzle and entertainment including guest speakers, Mayor Bob Parker and Progressive Party Leader and mayoral candidate, Jim Anderton.

There is also a Gamblefree Day Dining out discount at over 220 participating restaurants in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.
