Super fast fibre links Auckmageddon gamers to the world

Local gamers will take on the world at North Harbour Stadium this weekend courtesy of Vector and Orcon.

The Auckland-based companies are bringing the gaming world alive at Auckmageddon - a major gaming convention fast growing in popularity - through ultra-fast fibre network connectivity.

Local gamers can leave their frustrations with network latency behind when they converge on the Stadium to compete with each other, and rivals from around the globe.

Up to 500 gamers are likely to take part in the fun event – the second largest of its kind held in New Zealand this year. More than 250 are registered already.

Thanks to the partnership between Orcon and Vector’s ultra-fast fibre network, gamers can play on global servers at lightning fast speed from this Friday to Sunday (August 27-29).

Vector is providing symmetrical network connectivity of 1Gbit/s which will ensure the gamers don’t have to contend with latency and ‘jitter’ while gaming. G-PON based fibre has much lower latency than standard DSL products.

Orcon CEO Scott Bartlett says the gaming fraternity is a good fit for his company so supporting the event was logical.

“Gamers rely on broadband. The better the broadband, the better their performance. We are really excited to partner with Vector to deliver the performance that gamers need for this huge event, and wish all the competitors the best,” says Mr Bartlett.

Vector Chief Executive Simon Mackenzie says Vector’s Auckland-wide fibre optic network has been designed to provide multi-Gigabit connectivity, which amongst other things, is ideal for gaming.

“It’s good to be part of Auckmageddon. We have had a lot of feedback from the gaming community on our fibre to the door website, lamenting the lack of network speed availability, along with the latency they have to put up with on copper-based networks,” says Mr Mackenzie.

“Those issues disappear on our fibre network so we are glad to be in a position to repay the support we’ve had from gamers through our fibre to the door campaign. Gaming is just one form of entertainment that a high speed fibre network can support.”

Vector believes it has the best solution to deliver on the Government’s ultra-fast broadband initiative through extending its network to the door of every premises in Auckland. Build partners will be selected later this year.
