The Rt.Hon. Helen Clark, ONZ is Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School’s new Patron. Ms Clarke, currently Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and past Prime Minister of New Zealand, is well-known for her support of the arts. On a recent visit to New Zealand she agreed to lend her name to promote the School in the Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

Ms Clark’s patronage of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School acknowledges the status of the School as the country’s foremost training establishment for the dramatic arts. The School’s vision is to lead in the training of actors, directors, technicians and designers in performing arts – nationally and internationally.

“We are delighted and privileged to have Ms Clark as our Patron. This is a great recognition of the theatre and screen training at Toi Whakaari as we celebrate 40 years of excellence and we look forward to developing our relationship with Ms Clark further.” said Annie Ruth, Director of Toi Whakaari.

Established in 1970 as small acting school for nine hopefuls, Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School has grown to a School of 140, with qualifications in Acting, Design for Stage and Screen, Entertainment Technology, Performing Arts Management, Costume Construction and Directing.

Toi Whakaari has produced more than 700 graduates over the last forty years, 80% of whom are working in the industry today. Graduates from the acting degree include illustrious names such as Cliff Curtis, Kerry Fox, Marton Csokas, Robyn Malcolm, Kirk Torrence and Rawiri Paratene.
