Top 10 Tips for
Travelling in Style
New York. London. Paris. Milan.
House of Travel flies thousands of people to these fashion capitals of the world each year. Next week it’s our turn, as international and local fashionistas descend upon Auckland for the 2010 New Zealand Fashion Week.
Anna Fitzpatrick, local style icon and editor of FrontRowDiary.com, has travelled to many of these fashion meccas and knows a thing or two about balancing style and comfort when travelling!
House of Travel has teamed with Anna to provide 10 top tips for travelling in style:
1. To avoid wrinkles, pack clothes
made of microfiber, silk, wool, knitwear and polyester, and
roll your soft items. If this fails, on arrival hang your
wrinkled clothing in the bathroom while you shower – the
steam helps smooth out the wrinkles
2.
Compartmentalise your packing. Group your t-shirts together,
dresses together and jeans together and keep them separate
– that way you don’t have to pull your entire bag apart
to find any one item
3. Be careful when packing items with studs, sequins, or beading. When your bag is thrown around in the plane, these could catch on other delicate items and pull the fabric or create holes
4. Use up every inch of space in your bag. If you’re travelling with boots, stuff them with your socks or underwear
5. Always store creams and liquids in a re-sealable plastic bag. Many creams expand at high altitudes and you don’t want them exploding over all your clothes
6. Avoid 'just in case'
packing. Before you leave have an idea of the kinds of
outfits you will need on your trip. If you only have one
formal outing, don’t pack three pairs of high
heels!
7. Pack all your shoes in the bottom of your suitcase and fill in the gaps with your rolled clothes
8. Wear plenty of layers – for example, a cotton t-shirt, light cardigan, jacket and a shawl. This way you can take off or put on clothing as and when you need to on the plane and on arrival
9. To avoid dry and flaky skin,
apply moisturiser to your face, hands and body before and
during your travels. MAC essential oil in Lavender and
Orange is soothing and keeps skin looking fresh and relaxed
after a long flight. The tiny bottle also means that it
doesn’t take up any space in your carry-on
10. Pack a small zip-lock bag full of any necessities that you need on the plane (remembering everything has to be under 100ml). Makeup wipes, essential oil, hair brush, lip gloss, toothpaste and a toothbrush is a good start.
“We know packing can be stressful, and long flights and limited suitcase space can make it difficult to achieve the balance between style and comfort. Our tips for travelling in style are tried and tested by House of Travel advisors – and fashionistas alike!” says House of Travel Communications Manager, Jo Wedlock.
