Festival Embraces Youth and Family Events

MANUKAU FESTIVAL OF ARTS 10
October 15th – October 31st 2010

The Manukau Festival of Arts ’10 has something for everyone, young and old, for families and the kids.

Manukau’s annual kite festival, Colour The Sky will see Barry Curtis Park’s skyline bejewelled with stunning flying works of art, from the professional to the home-made (thanks to kite making workshops taking place around schools in Manukau and on the day). Colour The Sky was one of the most popular festival events last year and this year will be no exception.

From the people who brought The Twits, The Owl and The Pussy-Cat and The Dragon of an Ordinary Family to New Zealand comes Snake & Lizard; Tim Bray Productions’ entertaining and very funny tale of two very unlikely new best friends. Snake is elegant and calm; Lizard is exuberant and irrepressible. Snake and Lizard see past their differences and become firm friends; a moral which many could take away from the performance.

Young artists are a very important part of the festival, and the Manukau Youth Art Awards celebrate their talent. Four high school students have been selected to undertake an intensive programme of tutoring at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts. From this three-day session judges select an overall award winner who has their work presented on a 10 x 3.5 meter high billboard beside the Southern Motorway.

Full Throttle – Drive In Movies looks to bring the community together in front of one large screen on Labour weekend for free drive-in movies in the early evening, following the day’s showcase of vehicles in action. This year’s event sees “The World’s Fastest Indian” screened to audiences followed by the winner of the Manukau Film Festival short film competition.

And finally the Kids Concert offers up an hour-long programme filled with a fun variety of music, delightful explanations and lots of laughs; the perfect concert for kids and the whole family to participate in.
