As New Zealand’s top designers are showcasing their designs at NZ Fashion Week, 34 young up and coming designers were judged this week by key stakeholders in the fashion industry for the Newmarket Young Fashion Design Award 2010.
NZ fashion designer Vicki Taylor from Taylor Boutique, fashion industry guru Paul Blomfield, Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design Belinda Watt from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Meegan Pollock from Centrepoint Fabrics along with Maria Beer from Qantas and Grant Bevin from Business World Travel gathered at Whitecliffe to judge the 34 finalists’ entries from throughout the north island.
The award organiser and acting chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association Lea Worth said the judges were overwhelmed with the standard and diversity of this year entries which will be displayed from Tuesday 28th September at the Rialto Centre in Newmarket.
People will have till Sunday 10th October to
vote for their favourite garment in the 2010 Newmarket Young
Fashion Design Awards.
The People Choice category enables
the public to have their say and be in to win a $500 Rialto
Shopping voucher.
The Overall winner who will be announced at a special awards evening on the 17th October at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre will fly Qantas with a companion to New York, work backstage at the Karen Walker show at the New York Fashion Week and receive $1,000 spending money.
He or she will also receive a tuition grant towards Year One and Year Two of study for a Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design Scholarship and a two-week design assistant internship working alongside Vicki Taylor.
“This year’s awards are shaping up to be a great contest. The competition is all about – Looking to the future and maybe even discovering New Zealand’s next top fashion designer. The winning prize package is an opportunity of a lifetime and will be life changing for the lucky person” Mrs Worth Said.
