Virtuoso Pianist David Helfgott To Shine in NZ

Virtuoso Pianist David Helfgott To Shine in NZ

His remarkable life story was told in the Oscar-winning film Shine – now virtuoso pianist David Helfgott performs live in New Zealand this November.

One of the world’s best-loved pianists, David Helfgott performs in Nelson, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The concerts will showcase David’s mesmerising brilliance for classical enthusiasts and general music fans alike with a programme of popular works by the great romantic composers including Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov and, of course, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee, with which he dazzled a worldwide audience at the 1997 Oscars.

"I am reluctant to use the word genius, but I would certainly make an exception with David Helfgott" Le Parisien

David Helfgott is considered a living legend. His extraordinary talent as a pianist was recognised at a very early age and he studied at London’s Royal College of Music. In the 1970’s, mental illness overtook his life, but he made a triumphant return to the world stage in the 1980’s with sold-out concerts across Australia, a European tour and a series of CDs.

The 1996 movie Shine told his incredible story with actor Geoffrey Rush winning an Oscar for his astonishingly accurate portrayal of David. He has since performed concerts around the world, selling out the Sydney Opera House four nights in a row and performing to a capacity audience and standing ovation at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

A pianist of extraordinary talent….he soars into another dimension Courier Mail

David Helfgott performs at the Nelson School of Music on Sunday 21 November at 2pm, at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch on Tuesday 23 November at 7.30pm, at the Opera House, Wellington on Thursday 25 November at 7.30pm and at Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE on Friday 26 November at 7.30pm.
