Gimme Some Truth: A John Lennon Tribute Night

To celebrate John Lennon's Birthday and the remastering of his solo catalogue, 95bFM, EMI, and the best bands in the land are bringing you their take on Lennon's solo work and influence on us all.

Each band will perform three Lennon covers and two original songs, putting their own unique spin on Lennon's timeless songwriting. Infamous songs like Imagine have projected a zen-like image of Lennon, but in reality, he was a far more complex and difficult character. The variety of artists on the Tribute bill reflect the diversity of Lennon's catalogue.

Silver Scroll Finalists and Pacific Blue Breakthrough Artist of the Year nominees at the upcoming NZMAs, the Artisan Guns have managed to walk a fine sonic line. Hearts, the second EP release from the Auckland-based quartet, sees the band tip their hats to the folk sounds of their first EP but have evolved into something bigger, better, and weirder. We're excited to see how Lennon's songwriting is translated by the Artisan Guns' pop hooks & loud, brash walls of sound.

Wearing their pop sensibilities on their sleeves, the four indie rockers of Clap Clap Riot are hard at work recording demos to follow up their 2009 EP TV Knows Better. Catchy as all hell and sure to get you sweating it out in front of the stage, these boys are sure to tear through their Lennon covers with energy to spare.

Since winning the 42Unheard competition in 2009, Ruby Frost has popped up with increasing frequency around Auckland and even across the Tasman. Echoing Regina Spektor armed with a laptop and dance beats, the 23-year-old songstress is taking time off from writing her debut album and preparing for the CMJ Festival to put her own spin on some of Lennon's catalogue.

F in Math is Michael Logie playing the bass alongside a drum machine & synth. He originally caught our attention with his cover of Benny & the Jets, and if that's any indication, his Lennon covers will bring a healthy dose of electro-quirk to the Kings Arms.

2 a.m. Orchestra is an evolving project helmed by David Kelley. Not everyone is born with bottomless songwriting ability and musical talent in broad strokes, but Kelley evidently was. This acoustic trio reminds us of the lovechild of Radiohead and a folksier Ben Folds, sure to do justice to Lennon's creative legacy.

Part of the global 'Gimme Some Truth' catalogue campaign that is being overseen by Yoko Ono, the release of eight remastered albums coincides with Lennon's 70th birthday on October 9th, 2010. This is the first time Lennon’s classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes. The remasters include Double Fantasy Stripped Down, Power To The People: The Hits, Gimme Some Truth, and the John Lennon Signature Box - all in stores October 4th.
