Deadly, The latest offering
from Awkward Productions at Downstage is a circus theatre
show with bite. Inspired by the seven deadly sins, it
explores the relationship between two people and how those
urges affect it. Filled with circus, contemporary dance,
conventional theatre and physical comedy, this is circus
with a twist.
Lighting Designer Nik Janiurek has done a stellar job setting the mood: starting with a darkened stage, the slow fade-up of the light creates an eery, mythic atmosphere that lasts throughout the show.
Although there is not much dialogue in Deadly, I found myself drawn in by the powerful chemistry between performers Rodrigo Osis and Virginia Molina. Both talented circus performers in their own right, their electrically charged connection on stage carries a real passion that brings the show alive.
Although packed with action, the highlight for me was the doubles trapeze. Without a doubt this was the stand-out section of the show; the sight of bodies weaving themselves in and out of each other in a breath-taking act of such simplicity and brilliance. Another highlight was the solo trapeze – as a trapeze specialist Molina brings something extra to this already outstanding performance, swinging from the rooftops without hesitation, absorbed in the golden rain that rains around her.
Deadly is definitely circus with bite.
