Sail away with the Meridian Aviemore Classic

Sail away with the Meridian Aviemore Classic

For immediate release: Tuesday 12 October 2010

Labour weekend’s Meridian Aviemore Classic promises exciting fresh water yacht racing and guaranteed family fun and entertainment.
This year is the 22nd anniversary of the race weekend, which is one of New Zealand’s biggest trailer yacht events, and is expected to be as popular as ever with entries from both serious and recreational trailer sailors from around the country.

About 90 boats will take part in the two-day regatta on Lake Aviemore between Kurow and Otematata. Racing starts at 11am on Saturday 23 October, and 10am on Sunday 24 October.

On Saturday spectators will be treated to championship races, including the NZ Trailer Yacht Championships, and the Noelex 25 South Island Championships as well as the Speights Fun Race. The Meridian Aviemore Classic will take place on Sunday and requires competitors to complete two full circuits of the lake and lasts all day.

Meridian’s sponsorship specialist, Tracey Wemyss, says Meridian has sponsored the event for 10 years. “As a major employer in Waitaki, Meridian is very involved in the local community. The Aviemore Classic is a great way to celebrate the power of wind and water as recreational and renewable energy resources.”

Tracey says the best place for members of the public to see the sailing action are either at the top of the lake, near Parson’s Point (where the start and finish line is) or around the Aviemore dam area where the boats sail. “It’s a great two days sailing for both competitors and spectators.”

Event organiser Ivan Stevenson says the event is the first regatta of the season and is eagerly awaited by sailors, the local community and spectators. “Months of planning goes into this event, and we are grateful for the support from Meridian and other sponsors.”
