Whirimako Black’s National Tour with Nigel Gavin

For immediate release

Soul Talk - Whirimako Black’s National Tour with Nigel Gavin 5 Nov – 5 Dec

New Zealand’s soul diva, Whirimako Black, is acclaimed for her jazz and blues interpretations and is a leading singer in Te Reo Māori.

Her ‘sublime and exceptionally expressive voice’ has been described as pure velvet - with ‘…a dry and smoky lower register and an uncluttered delivery that owes much to great singers such as Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone and Dionne Warwick’.

Of Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Ranginui, Te Whakatōhea, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, and Te Arawa descent, her musical achievements include composing and singing the titles for the acclaimed TVNZ series, ’The New Zealand Wars’, as well as revising and modernising traditional Waiata, ‘to fulfil the dreams of my ancestors’.

Whirimako is the winner of numerous awards and has performed in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Taipei, Korea and Australia, as well as in this country. See below for details of her Arts on Tour NZ itinerary.

Accompanying her on this tour is master guitarist and string player, Nigel Gavin of Nairobi Trio, the Jews Brothers Band, Bravura, Gitbox Rebellion and Robert Fripps’ legendary League of Crafty Guitarists fame.

“Nigel Gavin is one of New Zealand’s musical treasures. The eccentric range of his musical projects is matched only be his astonishing virtuosity with stringed instruments and his prodigious musical imagination. Guitarists will be simply astonished by the technique on display ….Nigel’s finger-picking is so fast, so smooth, and so laden with sudden virtuoso explosions that it is damn near impossible to work out either what he’s doing, or how he’s doing it.”
