HEART RATE 180
Cycling across NZ to raise funds &
awareness for HEART KIDS
In memory of Jacob Pointon 24/7/89 – 20/12/08
Businesses and schools can help a Wellington mother and a New Zealand Army Cycling Team support hundreds of children born each year with a heart condition.
Nicola Pointon, whose only child died as a result of a heart abnormality, is hoping New Zealanders will hold a ‘Mad Hat & Tie Gold Coin Donation Day’ to raise money for the about 600 children born each year with a congenital heart condition.
Jacob Pointon died suddenly at Christmas 2008 aged 19 due to a massive stroke following a heart procedure expected to improve his quality of life. Jacob’s resting heart rate was 180 beats per minute hence the unusual name of the fundraiser.
The HR180 Army cycle team will cycle the length of New Zealand starting on November 13 in Bluff arriving 12 days later (November 24th) at Cape Reinga. As a victory lap they will complete the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge on November 27th with thousands of other cyclists.
“The fantastic care Jacob received from Heart Children NZ during his too short life eased the huge challenges that he faced. Heart Children NZ provides lifelong care for all those who live with a childhood heart condition. Congenital heart conditions are the most common serious birth abnormality in New Zealand needing ongoing medcal intervention. By supporting HR180 you will make a difference to the lives of these courageous children and their parents who support them, says Ms Pointon.
