Trinity Hill Scores Some Heavy Metal
Trinity Hill Scores Some Heavy Metal
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY 26TH NOVEMBER 2010
“Sick of writing the notes for this wine –because it wins all the time!” was the comment from Chairman of Judges Steve Smith MW when the Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Tempranillo scored it’s fourth successive trophy at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards held this week.
“Generous and rounded with lifted aromas of dark plum, dried fruit and floral notes. Excellent palate with a plush mouthfeel” announced the notes in the Trophy & Gold Medal Guide given to those who attended the awards dinner…”The producer of the top wine here has a great reputation for innovation and started the Syrah story in Hawke’s Bay. They have won this trophy (Other Red Styles) since 2007, with this 2008 Tempranillo being a wonderful example of juicy, rich, slightly spicy red wine, without being too big” it continued.
It soon became a case of heavy metal as two further gold medals were awarded to their Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay Noble Viognier 2009 and the Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2008. “Rich and complex, this is saturated with honey and dried fruit flavours with a richly textured and luxurious palate” is what the Air NZ judges said about the Noble Viognier followed by “Youthful and charming on the nose with blueberry and floral notes followed by an attractive fleshy palate” for the HB Syrah.
All three of these wines were also included in the Blue Gold, Top 100 and Highly Commended categories at the prestigious Sydney Top 100 Wine Show while Trinity Hill’s Noble Viognier was also joined by their 2010 Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc and their Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008 were also finalists and Top 5 in Winestate Magazine’s Wine of the Year issue. “It’s amazing to think that New Zealand has relatively little Syrah planted when it can achieve such heights” wondered influential UK wine writer/blogger Jamie Goode at a recent tasting of “Trinity Hill’s wonderful Sarah's” at Providores in London. The Gimblett Gravel’s syrah clearly made a big impression, “brilliant in all three vintages” praised Goode. Also at the tasting were Ben Smith of Enotria, Jancis Robinson MW, Andrew Neather and Peter McCombie.
Trinity Hill’s Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2010 also scored Gold at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards and was selected by wine writer Yvonne Lorkin for her “Top 50 Festive Wines for Under $50” newspaper supplement due out on December 1st 2010. Wine writer Warren Barton has also chosen five Trinity wines for his annual Top 100 and Peter Saunders has picked three Trinity wines for his ‘Best of the Best 2010’ publication.
Understandably these successes have created a whirlwind for business as John Hancock, CEO of Trinity Hill Wines watches incredible results continue to roll in. But it’s not just success at the shows that’s filling the Trinity team with pride. As a sponsor on the UK-NZ Young Chef’s Challenge, Robyn Wilson the UK-based Chairman of Trinity Hill was proud to announce this year’s winner as 19 year old Ben Murphy. Ben is a commis chef at the prestigious Koffman Restaurant at London’s five-star Berkeley Hotel. Ben won a three week trip to New Zealand where he will cook at some of the country’s top establishments including Dine, Huka Lodge, Martin Bosley and Blanket Bay. The awards ceremony was held at The Penthouse atop New Zealand House in London. The competition, founded by kiwi celebrity chef Peter Gordon, is sponsored by Air New Zealand, New Zealand Lamb, New Zealand Venison, TradeNZ, Comvita Honey, Hildon Water and Trinity Hill.
