Damien Wright to play for Firebirds in HRV Cup

Cricket Wellington Media Release

Monday 29 November 2010

Damien Wright to play for Firebirds in HRV Cup opening double header

Opening bowler Damien Wright, from Victoria, Australia, will play for the Wellington Firebirds in this weekend’s opening two HRV Cup matches at the Basin Reserve against the Otago Volts and the Canterbury Wizards.

Damien Wright will join England’s Luke Wright as the Firebirds’ two international players for these opening two matches on Saturday and Sunday, both starting at 2.00pm.

Damien Wright is a right-arm fast medium bowler who plays for the Bushrangers in the Australian domestic First-Class, One-Day and Twenty20 (the Big Bash) competitions. Wright, who is also Victoria’s bowling coach, took 5 for 54 for Victoria on Saturday in a Sheffield Shield match against Queensland.

Wright has extensive cricketing experience over the past 13 seasons playing for both Victoria and Tasmania in Australia and for English domestic sides Northamptonshire, Glamorgan, Somerset, Sussex and Scotland (in the County competition). He has also played eight times for Australia A.

Wellington Firebirds coach Anthony Stuart says Damien Wright will be a welcome addition to the Firebirds team for these two matches.

“Damien’s a vastly experienced player who we hope will give us an opportunity to take early wickets in these opening HRV Cup Twenty20 matches,” says Stuart

“He’s an aggressive new ball bowler, is very good in the field and is more than capable with the bat. I know he’ll give us everything he’s got while he’s here.”

Wright arrives in Wellington on Friday.

The Firebirds squad for the first two matches against the Volts on Saturday and the Wizards on Sunday will be named on Wednesday.
