Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 26 January 2011

A steady torrent of America's Cup news continues to flood across our desk, with the announcement this morning of the dates for the 34th America's Cup, which will - as outlined in earlier documents from San Francisco - be sailed in September 2013.

The Louis Vuitton Cup will start mid-July.

Another potential team ALL4One - a combined Franco-German effort has announced that they will build a TP52 for this year's Audi MedCup circuit. The circuit while apparently set to suffer from a lack of interest at the end of last year's event - has gained a new lease of life and will be bigger than ever.

ALL4One were one of the steady campaigners in the Louis Vuitton Trophy series, and quite where this move to monohulls places the team in regards to the 2013 America's Cup remains to be seen.

In this edition we feature an extract from former ISAF President's book entitled 'The Pope of Sailing'. The piece we have reprinted is on Bungy McRae, from Rotorua, who crewed for Ron Watson in the 1958 Prince of Wales Cup at Cowes England. Henderson relates how this Kiwi coped, or didn't in the rarefied atmosphere and protocols of the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The 2011 Laser Nationals have concluded in a nail-biter for for competitors and officials, we have a short report and the results in this edition of Sail-World. Also in this edition is a concluding report on the Zephyr Nationals sailed in picturesque Akaroa Harbour.

Bay of Islands Sailing Week has concluded, one of the features of the event was an excellent gallery of images both of the racing fleet, but also the superb venue for the regatta. In this edition of Sail-World we feature two galleries from the regatta, and will be publishing another couple on www.sail-world.com in the coming days.

We also feature a report on the Flying Fifteen Nationals, sailed as part of the Bay of Islands Sailing Week - which was won for the seventh time by a South Island crew.

Our commentary on the AC45 - and extending that experience into the 34th America's Cup has attracted much international comment. In this edition we feature the start of a mailbag on the issue - based on the AC45 experience, rather than commentators and readers being judged on whether they were, are or could have been perceived to been in the multihull or monohull camp - and their views coloured accordingly.

As we have noted before while there are some upsides and potential with a multihull America's Cup, there are significant downsides in terms of the impact on existing teams. Maybe in the near future we will revisit that topic. Entries close in just over two months, and at this stage many of the established America's Cup players are yet to declare their hands.

NZ Laser Nationals decided on a countback
NZ Laser Assoc and Sail-World,
2008 Olympic representative, Andrew Murdoch has won the 2011 New Zealand National Laser Championships, sailed at Torbay. Two day's racing were lost due to inclement weather, resulting in the regatta being shortened to just eight races, allowing one discard. America's Cup - USA 17 headed to San Francisco

The giant trimaran that won the 33rd America's Cup for Larry Ellison's Oracle Racing team is heading home to San Francisco. She was launched in Anacortes, WA, in August 2008, and after initial testing there moved to San Diego, CA, for a further period of training before being moved to Valencia for the 33rd Cup Match last February....
