World of Flutes: a Flute Choir

PRESS RELEASE

World of Flutes: a Flute Choir

Music by Michelle Scullion
Wellington Regional Tour: 20-25 February

Although Flute Choirs are a relatively new phenomenon in New Zealand, they have been around for many years in other parts of the world. Now Wellingtonians will be able to experience the trend and hear a group of six flute players perform a wide variety of repertoire in a series of daily lunch-time concerts – held February 20 -25 as part of the Wellington Fringe Festival.

For many years, Wellington composer and flute player, Michelle Scullion, has been composing music especially for flute and has finally decided to get together with some of Wellington’s best players to perform the repertoire. The Flute Choir will give a series of concerts touring the greater Wellington region from Upper to Lower Hutt ,and from Paraparaumu to downtown Wellington. They will be performing mostly in churches because of the sympathetic acoustic and the natural reverberation of sound.

Julie Sperring, the Executive Director of SOUNZ Centre for Music is very supportive of the project, stating:

The programme promises an eclectic selection of styles, played by a highly accomplished ensemble on a fascinating array of instruments from the flute family, and is sure to win the support and enjoyment of audiences around the region.

Scullion, herself is excited at the prospect:

The music I have created is influenced by a whole variety of different ethnic modes from around the world. It is a collection of solos, duets up to Sextets. The styles will also vary with a strong influence of minimalist music entwining through sounds of the tango, blues, classical, contemporary and rhythmic grooves.
