Maori Television nominated for 10 Best on the Box Awards

TV Guide Best on the Box Awards, announced today, see Maori Television nominated in 10 categories including best drama, actor, rising star, sports, lifestyle show, news and current affairs.

Chief Executive Jim Mather is thrilled to see Maori Television actors, presenters and programmes nominated for the country’s leading people’s choice awards. “Our 10 nominations are a credit to the commitment of everyone who worked on these shows. It’s now up to our viewers to vote” he says.

Kaitangata Twitch star Te Waimarie Kessell, who was only 13 at the time of filming, is nominated for Rising Star.

TV Guide Editor Julie Eley says this year’s list of Best on the Box nominees features a lot of young talent.

“I am constantly surprised by the fresh talent that continues to turn up on our television screens year after year,” says Eley. “This trend is indicative of an industry that has really come into its own.”

Kaitangata Twitch, a 13 part drama, is also nominated for Best Drama and George Henare for Best Actor.

Other Maori Television contenders in 2011’s TV Guide’s Best on the Box Awards are Mike King for Best Presenter Lifestyle/Advice for The Nutters Club, which is also nominated in Best Advice Show, Jenny-May Coffin for Best Presenter Sport (TV1 and Maori Television’s Hyundai Code), Hunting Aotearoa for Best Sports Show, Te Kaea for Best News, Native Affairs for Best Current Affairs and Kai Time on the Road has been nominated in the Best Lifestyle Show category.

Now it’s up to the viewers to decide this year’s Best on the Box winners. All entries will go into the draw to win one of five MY SKY HDi decoders (including installation), 12 months' subscriptions to SKY Basic package, SKY Sport and SKY Movies.

In last year’s competition, more than 200,000 votes were cast across 27 categories. This year’s awards mark the introduction of one new category which, for the first time, will give voters the opportunity to name their favourite channel.

Voting forms will be published in the February 10 and 17 issues of the TV Guide. To vote online, visit www.maoritelevision.com and click the TV Guide Best on the Box link. Voting closes on March 4 at 5pm with winners announced in the March 17 issue of the magazine.

If you missed any of these shows and would like to see what all the fuss is about visit www.maoritelevision.com to watch a selection of episodes on demand.
