Fogg’s firm grip on NZV8 championship lead
Leading NZV8 race driver Angus Fogg’s weekend at the Manfeild round of the BNT V8s Championship may not have proceeded entirely to plan, but the popular racer maintains a firm grip on the championship lead with just two more rounds to run.
Starting on Saturday 12 February with testing and qualifying, Fogg’s first hurdle was missing out on making the top ten shootout.
“The pace of the LG-ZB Falcon was good during the earlier test sessions and we were partway through the first part of qualifying with the eleventh quickest time when we came in to put new tyres on,” said Fogg, from Auckland’s North Shore. “Unfortunately that’s when our LG Motorsport teammate William Bamber went off and officials decided to end the session early... so there we were, ready to go, but with no opportunity to get out there and set a quicker time.”
Starting Sunday’s first 12-lap race from eleventh, Fogg then got tangled up in an incident with three other competitors. “I had to pit to get some damage attended to, and then I went out again but popped a tyre going down the back straight which was ‘exciting’... Back into the pits, we got that repaired and I managed to finish, albeit in 19th place.”
Race two and Fogg made the most of the LG-ZB Falcon’s strong pace to move from 19th up through the field to finish seventh, just two places behind his closest rival on the NZV8 points-table, Craig Baird. At this stage the margin between the two Ford drivers narrowed to just three points.
“From eleventh on the reverse grid line-up, I was very quickly able to get through to second place behind John McIntyre in the lead. Things looked pretty positive to hold second and nab the 67 points, but then there was a fuel surge right at the end and that let Paul Manuell through to take second. Still, third place and 60 points was enough to improve our margin over Craig to 37 points, helped by the fact he wasn’t able to finish better than 13th.”
Fogg’s teammate, William Bamber
also had a tough weekend. The Wanganui teenager struggled
with two non-finishes and a 19th place in the Manfeild
heat.
Fogg, Bamber and the LG Motorsport team are
back on track in Taupo from 12 to 13 March for the
penultimate round of the 2010-11 BNT V8s Championship.
