Horse Tales and Other Stories – DVD Collection

Horse enthusiasts can now enjoy a new collector’s edition of DVDs featuring their favourite animals, following the release of a collection of horse stories produced for the international market by Dunedin based production company NHNZ.

Packed full of incredible facts and rarely seen footage, Horse Tales and Other Stories tells fourteen unforgettable stories about an animal that has fascinated people for thousands of years - the horse. The eight hour long collection consists of three DVDs and includes the highly acclaimed Horse Tales series that mesmerized viewers when it was first screened in 1997.

From the freedom of wild horses to the skills of equestrian sport, the collection reveals the grace and intelligence of these animals that have played such a vital role in the existence of mankind.

Caroline Cook - the manager of new content at NHNZ and herself a horse lover - says this is a collection that every horse-lover will enjoy and cherish. “When I discovered that this series had been made for the international market but never aired in New Zealand I wanted to share these stories with other New Zealand horse-lovers.”

She says the Horse Tales series features a variety of horse breeds including thoroughbreds, Arabians, mustangs, Kaimanawas, Shetlands, Lusitanias and quarter horses. It covers many disciplines - from racing to polo, steeple-chasing to stunt and circus acts. “But above all it portrays the incredible connection between man and horse,” she says.

Ms Cook  then found two other programmes which were added to the collection.  Twisted Tales: the Horse tells the story of how the horse survived because man put it to work and Wild Horses: Return to China is the story of 27 endangered Przewalski wild horses raised in captivity and returned to the wilds of China.

“The cutest story has to be about the young rider aiming to win the Shetland Grand National, while the story about horse whisperer Monty Roberts who retrains a gate-shy racehorse in an attempt to save its life is incredibly moving,” she says.

The collection went on sale last week through selected retailers and online stores.  It can also be ordered online at www.nhnz.tv/dvds
