Local Rugby World Cup 2011 volunteers still needed
Rugby World Cup 2011 organisers are urging Northlanders to quickly put their hands up for volunteer roles as time is fast running out.
Northland’s Rugby World Cup 2011 planning team will be filling remaining volunteer roles at the last round of interviews later this month.
“We need in total about 200 volunteers and while we have already interviewed some fantastic candidates, we still need many more,” said Sport Northland’s Colleen Atchison.
“This will be the last chance for people to stake their claim to a place in history so we urge those invited to interviews to please come along. These are informal and fun opportunities where you will learn more about the Tournament and your possible role.”
The region will be hosting three teams during the Tournament – Canada, Japan and Tonga – and volunteers will carry out a myriad of roles in September and October this year leading up to and during the six-week Tournament.
She says while the Tournament itself is still six months’ way, time is pressing as interviews need to be completed promptly to allow training and uniforms to be organised.
Interviews are being held in Whangarei’s ASB Northland Sports House, Kensington Park, from 2pm-7pm on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 March and in Paihia, at the Paihia Community Hall, Williams Rd, from 3pm-7pm on Thursday 24 March.
The interview takes about 30 minutes. It starts with a presentation of the roles available after which each candidate meets with an interviewer for a chat to determine the best role. After this, uniform sizing is collected along with a photo for accreditation purposes.
Mrs Atchison says volunteering is a great opportunity for Northlanders to become more involved in one of the biggest sporting events New Zealand will ever host, as well as a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region – and its people.
While as the name suggests, the roles will be voluntary, those who do take part will get to keep the uniforms they wear while carrying out their official duties.
“This will be a great memento of your contribution to making RWC 2011 a success.”
The uniform consists of a jacket, polo shirt, rugby jersey and trousers and features the Tournament’s “look and feel” - the distinctive Mangopare and Koru designs which represent the world coming together in union for Rugby’s ultimate contest.
