APO Opens An Aladdin’s Cave Of Music
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra this month opens an Aladdin’s Cave of music with the first of its Great Classics Series concerts.
The pungent spices of the Arabian Peninsula waft through the series opener, with a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
This much loved symphonic suite, based on The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, is dazzlingly orchestrated and encompasses the full range of emotions – one minute tender, then next dramatic.
“Scheherazade is a real showpiece for orchestra,” says Ronan Tighe, the APO’s Manager of Artistic Planning. “It’s easily the finest work Rimsky-Korsakov wrote, and is as enjoyable for the orchestra to play as it is for audiences to listen to.”
Scheherazade is preceded by arguably the greatest of all works for cello and orchestra, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor. The APO, here conducted by rising star Garry Walker, is thrilled to be joined by one of the world’s leading cellists, David Geringas, who since winning the Tchaikovsky competition in 1970 has constantly travelled the globe as soloist and conductor.
“To play with people of the calibre of David Geringas gives everyone a tingle of excitement; he is one of those figures that other musicians pay to see perform,” says APO Chief Executive Barbara Glaser. “The combination of Geringas and guest conductor Garry Walker is a mouth-watering prospect.”
