Kiwi artists flying high
Kiwi music is on a roll. New Zealand artists are this week top of The Chart across all three music categories – single, album and compilations.
While it’s not entirely unprecedented but certainly rare, interestingly the trifecta has occurred three times in 12 months – even though it hadn’t happened for at least nine years previously.
Topping this week’s singles chart is Avalanche City with an apparent out-of-nowhere hit #1 Love, Love, Love.
Former Salmonella Dub member Tiki Taane’s In the World of Light completes a 28-place leap to the top of the album chart in its second week of release.
And rounding out the trifecta of new #1s is Pasifika: The Collection Volume 2 which heads the compilations chart in the wake of last weekend’s Pasifika Festival in Auckland.
Recording Industry of New Zealand Association head Chris Caddick is delighted with the news.
“It’s great for the musicians and good for the country at a time when many of us are reflecting on some pretty awful events both at home and offshore. I’m so stoked for the musicians who work really hard at their art.”
Avalanche City’s Dave Baxter pretty much did everything on the band’s debut album Our New Life Above Ground. He wrote, recorded, produced and played all instruments on the record but works with a band for live performances.
Love, Love, Love owes much of its success to being TV2’s current promo theme song. Baxter recorded the album in a small, abandoned country hall in the Matakana area north of Auckland. It’s being released on April 11.
Tiki Taane’s second solo album has climbed 28 places on The Chart on the back of some great reviews in the media. In the World of Light features collaborations with renowned dubstep producers Optimus Gryme, Truth, Concord Dawn and Crushington as well as guest vocalists Hollie Smith, Bebe And Moana and the Tribe.
Pasifika: The Collection Volume 2 was released just a week ago to coincide with the 2011 Pasifika Festival. It’s the second time a Pasifika collection has been part of a New Zealand artist chart trio and features a wide range of hits from the South Pacific.
Artists include J-Boog, Nesian Mystik, Katchafire, Jamoa Jam, OMC, Herbs, Tiki Taane and Savage, J. Williams
The Kiwi artists chart trifecta also occurred twice in 2010.
