Calling NZ, Australian and International Short Film Makers

29 March 2011

Calling New Zealand, Australian and now International Short Filmmakers!

In 2011 Show Me Shorts Film Festival is going global! In addition to playing the best New Zealand and Australian short films, Show Me Shorts is now accepting entries from all over the world. The deadline is 5pm Monday the 4th of July.

Screening the best 40 Kiwi and Australian short films in cinemas all over New Zealand from the 3rd of November, this annual festival plays a thematically and stylistically varied selection of the best short films.

Festival Director Gina Dellabarca announced the new international category for Show Me Shorts this week. “In response to widespread public demand to see more of the great short films made both here and abroad every year, we are happy to be able to deliver a selection of the best international films in our programme for the first time this year.”

Films accepted for screening in the new international section will screen ‘out of competition’, meaning they will not be eligible for the awards. Last year Felicity Letcher & Rachel Lorimer’s wry take on childbirth and love, ‘This is Her,’ won the Kodak Best Film category while the Oscar shortlisted ‘The Six Dollar Fifty Man’ took home the SDGNZ Best Director prize. There are eight award categories in the Show Me Shorts Film Festival, with a total prize pool worth over $20,000.

A further change to the entry guidelines for 2011 is the reduction in the minimum and maximum length guidelines. “We have listened to our audience who tell us that short snappy films keep them engaged, and we are responding to that. Staying close to our audience is part of what helped Show Me Shorts grow by over 20% last year. We’d like to see that growth continue,” says Dellabarca. All films must now be between two and twenty minutes long and be made within the last two years.
