Expedia Travel Value Tracker reveals the cost of
typical expenses in popular international destinations
Spending money stretches further on short haul
holidays
Auckland, 30 March 2011 –
On-the-ground costs can greatly impact the overall cost of a holiday. With travel expenses varying considerably from country to country, some insider knowledge about holiday expenses in certain destinations is handy for travellers wanting their spending money to stretch a little further.
To help travellers with their holiday budget, online travel company Expedia.co.nz has compiled its inaugural Expedia Travel Value Tracker*, which lists 10 typical everyday holiday items in 10 of the most popular international destinations for New Zealand travellers.
According to the Expedia Travel Value Tracker, a ‘basket’ of 10 most common holiday items, cost the least in Thailand (Phuket). Bali and Fiji.
Las Vegas, New York and Bali are among the destinations offering the cheapest cup of coffee and can of beer. In fact, travellers searching for their habitual early morning pick-me-up will be pleased to know that a cup of coffee in Bali costs a mere $2.70, whereas in Paris, the pleasure of sipping on a hot café will cost a whopping $10.75. Las Vegas and New York also present great value for money for a hamburger and fries, at $18.70 and $19.30 respectively, washed down with some of the world’s cheapest cans of Coca-Cola at $3.90 and $6.10 respectively.
A five minute phone call to New Zealand from your hotel room could cost you anywhere between $7.80 in Bali to $68.80 in London. The internet provides a much cheaper means to stay in touch, with London offering among the cheapest 60 minutes of internet access at $9.75.
Louise Crompton of Expedia.co.nz said: “We know that when you travel, every dollar counts. Fifty dollars, for instance, would cover a return taxi fare from the airport to your hotel in Las Vegas, as well as a cup of coffee, a can of beer, a bottle of water and a can of Coca-Cola at your hotel in that city. Some travel websites can charge you up to $50 just to book a flight, whereas Expedia does not charge a fee, so pocketing those fees gives you more money for those holiday essentials when you’re on the ground.
